Advanced ceramic: an innovative material
Advanced ceramics hold a special place among the new materials; they provide adapted solutions where metals and polymers cannot be used.
Highly refractory, with melting points sometimes exceeding 2,000°C, resistant to wear and corrosion, insulating or semiconducting, very solid in compression, low-density – ceramics indeed have an array of qualities that meet very specific needs.
Each day we find traditional materials being replaced by these “advanced” ceramics.
This phenomenon is spreading because of various factors:
- Regular improvements in the characteristics of ceramics : Doping, nanomaterials, electrical conductibility
- Constant improvements in manufacturing conditions (CIM (ceramic injection moulding), microCIM, digital machining…)
- Major simulation works intended to replace the function rather than the part itself.
